Russia is not only taiga, it is the arid steppe and sand dunes of the south and the city Astrakhan. After travelling about 3,500 km, the Volga meets the Caspian sea, creating Europe’s largest delta.
From the beginning of July to the end of August, you can take a boat trip to admire the pale pink lotus flowers. In autumn, migratory birds stop at the delta to catch their breath before continuing on. You can see swans, herons, storks, pelicans and, if you are lucky, some rare birds like the Peregrine falcon and the Siberian crane. The trip includes a visit of a sturgeon farm where they produce caviar and an excursion to the southernmost kremlin in Russia.
